National policies for compact, connected and clean cities

This Global Programme focused on the national policies and institutional arrangements that can promote compact and connected urban development.

Compact, connected cities are more economically dynamic and more carbon-efficient, since people can access jobs, services and amenities without depending on private cars.

This Global Programme identified the most powerful policy instruments to promote compact, connected growth while minimising any potential costs – such as higher housing prices. This provides an invaluable guide for ministries of housing, transport and land use seeking to boost the economic power of cities and create vibrant, green neighbourhoods where people want to live.

The team published a series of pioneering working papers on housing and transport policy. They also worked with national governments in Ethiopia, China and Mexico to appraise national policy options to secure the economic and social benefits of compact, connected cities.
